The Mersea Session at The Coast Inn, West Mersea, Essex
If you are looking for the rockingest acoustic session in Essex, it's on at the Coast Inn, in West Mersea, 8 miles south of Colchester, every Thursday night. The acoustic of the venue is excellent, wooden floor, no soft furnishings and varied ceiling heights. The beer is excellent, currently Green King IPA, Mersea Island Brewery's Yo Boy! and Maldon Gold, Champion Beer of Britain 2007. But be warned, musician seats fill up fast, as do the remainder for listeners/drinkers, so it's wise to arrive about 8pm. And don't expect an early night - the music usually finishes about 11.30. Music style is widely varied, from Irish, Scottish, English and American tunes to bluegrass, jazz and rock, with songs from many genres. It is a completely inclusive session, with no cliques or rules, just respect for fellow singers and musicians.

The Askew Sisters at Maidenhead Folk Club, Maidenhead, Berkshire
"Emily and Hazel Askew are a young duo making waves on the folk scene with their energetic brand of English folk music. Using fiddle and melodeon, they play and sing with an infectious enjoyment and love for the music, winning them fans wherever they go. From rhythmic foot stomping tunes to powerful interpretations of songs and ballads, their playing always guarantees to engage and inspire those who hear."

Armed with fiddle, finger-style guitar and two voices, My Sweet Patootie is an old-fashioned shotgun wedding of cool uptown swing and rural Ontario grit. Mark S. Tucker of the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange (FAME) describes them as “a world of string wizardry”."

Traditional Song Session, Kitchen Garden Cafe, York Road, Birmingham
Traditional music sessions take place in pubs all over the city but traditional singing is also alive and well. Here's a chance to sing and listen to traditional songs in a friendly and informal environment.

James Hollingsworth at The Barrels, 69 St Owen Street, Hereford, Herefordshire
"James Hollingsworth’s main stage set on the Saturday afternoon of the festival ranged from what was grounded in the traditional – a voice buzzing in the ear, the familiar plucked guitar – to what seemed to border on the celestial, as both voice and a much effected, but delicately measured, acoustic guitar swept back and forth across the arena. James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006

Nancy Kerr and James Fagan at The Hungry Horse Acoustic Folk Club, The Rake (Pub/Restaurant), Rake Lane, Little Stanney, near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

Described by The Guardian as “the finest instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo, Spiers & Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground. Loud, proud, and with just a few acoustic instruments, they create a multitude of textures upon which they present traditional stories and dance music which have taken them on to the main stages of major festivals.

The Queensberry Rules at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
"There was a time when anyone from the Potteries would lift up their china cup or plate wherever they were in the world to check for the reassuring words ‘Made in England’. Alas the industry has all but gone now, but these three young lads have the same stamp of Potteries quality! GARY WILCOX (Vocals, Percussion), PHIL HULSE (Vocals, Guitar, Bouzouki, Harmonica) and DUNCAN WILCOX (Vocals, Double Bass, Mandolin) create beautifully-crafted songs that document and vividly illustrate the passing of the old ways of their homeland, the local heroes and characters, the old industries and the struggle for a new identity and way forward. Angry, sad, funny, tongue-in-cheek and occasionally one-fingered salutes, the songs are kiln-fired and defiant in the face of adversity, with great harmonies and musicianship. Snapped up by Fellside Records for their third album ‘Take Your Own Roads’, while they nod their heads to the likes of Jez Lowe, Steve Tilston and Show of Hands their sound is very much their own, so check out these ‘Boys from the Crock Stuff’! Americana Folk Night featuring The Cedars and guests Pig Earth at The Half Moon, Putney, West London
A UK based Alt-Americana quartet, with soaring vocals, infectious rhythms and blasts of slide guitar and banjo. Plying tales of lost love, revenge and rural homicide, The Cedars manage to straddle the divide between the dancehalls of the 20's and 30's and what's going on in the scene right now
Pig Earth is a contemporary Folk / Americana band, formed around the songwriting of Neil Keveren and Emma Steele. The band knocks out positive, uplifting stompers and rambling rolling tales of love, travel and home. The vivacious songs often have a strong narrative, but the band's approach is far from traditional. They have performed at various venues and festivals across the UK and this year will see the release of their much anticipated album. Check out their new songs "Smoke and Mirrors" and "American Cars"----.

Eric Brace and Peter Cooper at Twickfolk, Twickenham, West London
"Since 1997, Eric Brace has been the frontman and songwriter for the acclaimed roots-rock band Last Train Home. At the core of the band's sound are Eric's evocative songs and his warm voice. The Washington Post proclaims that "Brace hasn't let years of gruelling road work compromise his songcraft. With his latest release, "You Don't Have to Like Them Both," Eric steps away from the comfortable surroundings of Last Train Home, and puts his own name on the cover of the CD. Eric and Peter Cooper have been friends since Eric's move to Nashville in 2004, a friendship that was solidified in Peter's living room listening to Tom T. Hall and Charley Pride while pouring screw top red wine. Pretty soon they were playing guitars and singing songs together and recording began for "You Don't Have to Like Them Both," accompanied by some of the greatest musicians in Nashville. Last year Eric and Peter stopped by TwickFolk to do an opening set for Ray Bonneville....this year we're pleased to offer them a headline appearance. They'll be joined by the rhythm section from Eric's band 'Last Train Home' and by Nashville Singer-songwriter Phil Lee who writes intelligent songs full of wit, humour and grace."

His voice is warm, full & clear, bearing comparison with James Taylor, David Gray & Jackson Browne. Ana Egge at The Green Note, Camden, London
"Lucinda Williams once called her "a folk Nina Simone." But Ana Egge is more country than that. Raised by hippies who grew wheat in North Dakota, the Brooklyn singer–songwriter crafts homespun hymns on her sixth disc to sing with your bare feet on the dashboard. "Bully of New York" recounts a sad late–night conversation between Egge and a park ranger whose hours broke up his marriage (best part: She met him while hitchhiking). Egge's rootsy pedal–steel pop recalls singers like Shawn Colvin, but her sharply observed tales of the overlooked and underpaid feel utterly of the moment." Rolling Stone

Wendy Arrowsmith at Fleetwood Folk Club,Fleetwood, Lancashire
"Born and raised in the suburbs of Glasgow, Wendy’s musical influences as a child were mostly Trad Jazz or Church hymns! Although she learnt Burns and other traditional Scottish songs at school, it wasn’t until she moved to England to marry that she began to really delve into traditional folk music. Wendy has sung many different styles of music – ranging from large scale classical choral works, operetta and musicals to backing vocalist for a prog rock band! But with folk music she has found songs that come from the heart and allow great emotional expression and social commentary. She describes herself as “a singer who plays guitar”, but this shouldn’t detract from Wendy’s musical abilities not just on guitar, but also on whistles, bodhran, mandolin and most recently accordion."

Alt. Country "Inventors" play a rare UK acoustic show

Diana Jones at The Basement, Brighton, Sussex
Diana Jones had released two finely crafted albums in the 1990s, but it wasn’t until she released My Remembrance of You in 2006 that she found her own voice. She had discovered a connection, both biological and artistic, to the sounds of old-time Appalachia, unleashing her private muse and creating a critically acclaimed record.
The three years since that breakthrough have been a whirlwind. Diana has landed the opening slot on high-profile European tours with Richard Thompson and Mary Gauthier and has been the featured invitee at folk festivals in the US, the UK and Ireland.

He is a fresh and powerful new voice in world music; a leader of the new generation of Latin American songwriters, an ambassador of Latin American music and a student of the traditional music of the world. Since he started playing violin at 3 at the feet of his sister, he has travelled in his home town of Santiago, across Latin America and around the globe, filling old bottles with new wine.
Nano has attracted a legion of fanatical followers, drawn to their their feet, thundering for more. His solo live show is not to be missed. Otis Gibbs at Henry Boons, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
"Otis Gibbs is a man in search of an honest experience. Some people refer to him as a folk artist, but that is a simplistic way to describe a man who has planted over 7,000 trees, slept in hobo jungles, walked with nomadic shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains, been strip-searched by dirty cops in Detroit, and has an FBI file. Hank Wangford with Andy Roberts at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
"Woah! Hank is back on the ol’ trail. With his dodgy hat, wide-toothed grin and George Hamilton IV “$incere” eyebrows, Hank is the nemesis of Country music yet he still aspires to the glamour of his heroes. Life President of the Nude Mountaineering Society and the one and only inductee in his own Hall of Pain (it’s not that other stars wouldn’t be seen dead in it, they’re just too dead to be seen in it), he’s picked at the soft, dark underbelly of Country music for a long time. Misery and melody, raw emotion and open ribcages are his trademark. All said, he loves it really, and if you split your sides laughing (as you will), he’s a gen-u-ine doctor and he’ll fix you right (for a small fee). Now D-I-V-O-R-C-E-D from his former pardner Reg Meuross, Hank has hooked up again with his old saddlepal BRAD BREATH (aka Andy, who is also the touring guitarist in that well-known Folk group PINK FLOYD). Currently a member of the mile-high club (BA are featuring his new CD ‘Whistling In The Dark’ as their chosen Country album on Transatlantic flights), Hank twangs like no other!"
