Saturday 23rd August
Paul Downes at Shammick Acoustic Sessions, The Castle Inn, High Street, Combe Martin, North Devon
“Paul's sensitive and yet fun approach to his live performances puts him among the most respected artists on the British acoustic music scene. He has been introduced (much to his embarrassment) as one of the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world. It is easy to see why when you see the dazzling array of styles he performs with effortless brilliance, but at the same time he considers himself as a singer of songs, rather than a guitar technician. With a rich musical background that has progressed through working with Phil Beer of Show of Hands, The Arizona Smoke Revue, Pete Seeger and, currently, The Joyce Gang, he has recorded eight albums with bands and three solo albums. A great performance is in store!"

“A popular return visit from a man who first came to the club as a visiting performer, and stunned everyone with his versatility in playing numerous instruments, along with a brilliant choice of songs, many with great choruses. Pete seems to have been around forever, but continually reinvents himself, and now at over 60 seems to have an energy that puts many a younger performer to shame - well, how many do you know that sing, play and step-dance all at the same time? With a tremendous knowledge and love of traditional songs from all over the English-speaking world, an ability to write relevant songs of his own, and interpret the songs of others, the variety that this man can pack into an evening is phenomenal!"

Living Tradition review from Dan's 2006 UK tour. Dan hails from Halifax,
Nova Scotia, in the Canadian Maritimes, an area rich in the musical and
cultural traditions of the North Atlantic. His warm baritone voice,
superb guitar arrangements and original compositions have won him
widespread praise. Dan's thoughtful compositions and smooth melodies
cover the entire folk spectrum, with themes traditional, historical,
contemporary and universal. A gentle unassuming man - one of nature's
gentlemen, in fact - who travels around the UK by train and bus when
he's over here with a backpack and a guitar. Dan has tremendous stage

Christy Moore with Declan Sinnott at Memorial Hall and Theatre, Gladstone Road, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan
"Legendary Irish folk singer songwriter and bodram player Christy Moore has announced two Welsh dates to round off 2008’s highly anticipated autumn tour.
Undoubtedly one of the best songwriters Ireland has ever produced, Christy has been dubbed as 'Truly the Bob Dylan of Irish music'. His influence and stature in folk music is unparalleled with Bono, Elvis Costello, the Pogues and Billy Bragg amongst those who cite him as a key influence.
A successful recording career spanning over 35 years has kept Christy at the forefront of Irish folk music.
Known as founder of 70s classic folk band Planxty, and occasional member of folk 'supergroup' Moving Hearts in the 80s, Christy’s songwriting has been noted for adding elements of rock and popular music to well crafted traditional tunes.
Infamous for making music founded with political and social commentary, an extensive back catalogue of band and solo work charts the emotive personal and political issues that have shaped Christy’s life.
Playing live with one of Ireland's most gifted musicians Declan Sinnott, expect a subtle and poignant performance, perforated with humour and banter."

James Hollingsworth at The March Hare, Priors Dean Road, Winchester, Hampshire
"James Hollingsworth’s main stage set on the Saturday afternoon of the festival ranged from what was grounded in the traditional – a voice buzzing in the ear, the familiar plucked guitar – to what seemed to border on the celestial, as both voice and a much effected, but delicately measured, acoustic guitar swept back and forth across the arena. James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006

events £22.00) - 01484 606230
Thrills and Chills...Finest Kind's vocal arrangements are a creative
tour de force. Tradition-based yet curiously modern, the trio's
harmonies are an enchanting feast of opulent chords and ever changing
textures. The trio's amazing vocal blend has been called "molecular
bonding" by one reviewer: "Any closer," he says, "and they wouldn't be
allowed to do it in public." Audiences invariably mention "goosebumps."
Each member of Finest Kind brings to the group a lifetime’s learning
and experience in many worlds of music. Each is at home on stage, the
recording studio, and the folksong archive. They not only sing
beautifully; they can tell you things you never knew—or knew you
wanted to know—about the songs. They have instructed at heritage music
programmes in both Canada and the U.S. Posen has studied the singing
traditions of Ottawa Valley loggers and Newfoundland fishermen, taught
Sacred Harp, sung an astonishing number of styles.

"Yes, Calgary's Luft is a Wailin' Jennys founder but so much more too.
Think Julie Miller meets Gillian Welch on a lot of this, with an
occasional bit of Linda Thompson tossed in. This could be very big." -
John P. McLaughlin, The Light Fantastic
Cara Luft is a dynamic performer with deep roots in both folk and rock
'n roll, who got her start at age four playing autoharp and dulcimer in
her family's band. Raised by folk-musician parents in the heart of the
extensive and passionate traditional music community in Calgary, she was
steeped as a youth in a setting of spiritual music, house concerts, folk
clubs and festivals. A whole new world opened up when her parents gave
her an acoustic guitar and she discovered Led Zeppelin.
Belshazzar's Feast at Shammick Acoustic Sessions, The Castle Inn, High Street, Combe Martin, North Devon
“Are they classical? Are they folk? Are they a category not even dreamed of yet by the reviewers? The answer to all three questions is undoubtedly YES - and they're a lot more besides. Paul Sartin (Bellowhead, Faustus) on voice, fiddle and oboe plus Paul Hutchinson (Hoover the Dog) on voice and accordion have a perfect partnership. You can listen to their music on the Web - note perfect and subtly nuanced - but it's not going to tell you the half of what you'll experience in concert because there are some things that you just can't bottle. The humour in a look, a groan, a frantic flailing at a keyboard as the pace hots up and the partnership disintegrates into combat of an entirely musical kind. And still it's note perfect... until it's not... and that's where the superb dexterity of these two amazing musicians really comes into its own. A line of bum notes, perfectly timed between the two of them suddenly turns over the audience's perception and brings forth howls of laughter. And was that really a measure of Hark the Herald Angels in the middle of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik? The musical jokes whistle past your ears with lightning speed. Another not to be missed evening!"

Pete Coe at Birdsedge Live @ Birdsedge Village Hall, Penistone Road, Birdsedge, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire (7.30 (doors open 7.00) Tickets £7.00 from 01484 606230)
"A One-Man Folk Industry!" was how Jim Lloyd described Pete Coe on Folk
on 2. With a vast repertoire of traditional & original songs, dance
tunes & dances playing bouzouki, melodeon, dulcimer, banjo & step
percussion, he's been a professional musician since 1971. Pete looks to
the tradition, but doesn't shrink from adapting and reinventing in order
to move forward. He is essentially a storyteller, equally at home with
lengthy traditional ballads as with pithy self-penned songs. He has
recorded ten albums, broadcasts regularly on local and BBC radio and has
appeared in several television programmes. Journalist Colin Irwin wrote
in Mojo Magazine, "He explores the heartland of the English folk song
revival with an ease and honesty that invests traditional songs with a
simplistic beauty"

Vin Garbutt at Birdsedge Live @ Birdsedge Village Hall, Penistone Road, Birdsedge, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire (7.30 (doors open 7.00) Tickets £10.00 from 01484 606230
"One of the best loved characters on the folk scene, Vin Garbutt's
performance at our festival in 2006 had the audience laughing so hard I
thought we might need a medic standing by. Funny, impassioned, melodic
and unique. Vin is a performer NOT to be missed. If you've seen him
before you'll know. If you haven't take my word for it and book early."
