The Strawbs at The Pavilion, Hailsham, Sussex
"The Strawbs electric show at the Pavilion will feature Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Chas Cronk, John Hawken and Rod Coombes.
This was the line-up that completed the band’s move from folk to pop to prog rock in 1974 with the album Hero and Heroine, which followed the success of the singles Lay Down and Part of the Union that had reached twelve and two in the charts in 1972-73.
In their five-piece incarnation, two very different styles emerge. Cousins supplies the folk element, while Lambert provides the rock - the long hair, power chords, and the occasional Pete Townshend-style leap into the air.
On the face it, the combination shouldn’t work - there is no obvious musical connection, for example, between Witchwood, Cousins’s tale of a bosky ramble in winter time, and the lovelorn, up tempo Heartbreaker, written by Lambert - but somehow it does.
Their voices are very different, but they share a common passion for the music which is clear in complex pieces like Autumn, Ghosts and The River/Down By The Sea when lead vocals are alternated."

James Hollingsworth at The Queens Head, Wolverley, Kidderminster, Worcestershire
"James Hollingsworth’s main stage set on the Saturday afternoon of the festival ranged from what was grounded in the traditional – a voice buzzing in the ear, the familiar plucked guitar – to what seemed to border on the celestial, as both voice and a much effected, but delicately measured, acoustic guitar swept back and forth across the arena. James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006

James Hollingsworth at The March Hare, Priors Dean Road, Winchester, Hampshire
"James Hollingsworth’s main stage set on the Saturday afternoon of the festival ranged from what was grounded in the traditional – a voice buzzing in the ear, the familiar plucked guitar – to what seemed to border on the celestial, as both voice and a much effected, but delicately measured, acoustic guitar swept back and forth across the arena. James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006
Folkworks: The North East Welcomes North East Scotland at The Sage, Gateshead, Tyneside
The North East Welcomes... are occasional concerts showcasing one region's music alongside some of this region's traditions. Singer and fiddler Shona Donalson is one of Scotland's leading young tradition bearers, having appeared in the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year and BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards finals. Paul Anderson may be familiar from Shetland group Rock Salt & Nails, or as a pillar of the Scottish accordion and fiddle scene. Geordie Murison from Stonehaven is a gifted interpreter of the songs of his region and was crowned Champion of Champions at the 2008 Bothy Ballad Championships. From North East England comes Alice Burn, prize-winning Northumbrian piper and member of Folkestra, showing the tradition is safe. Coquetdale shepherd Graham Dick was inspired to sing by the Jackson brothers, shepherds of a previous generation who sang the old songs of the borders. Alistair Anderson, concertina and Northumbrian pipes, has taught and inspired countless musicians over his career.

Southern Tenant Folk Union, The Epstein and The Zetland Players at The Luminaire, Kilburn, London
"Formed by Belfast born five-string banjo player Pat McGarvey and taking their name from the ground breaking multi-racial union of sharecroppers and non-landowning tenant farmers founded in Arkansas in the 1930’s, the Southern Tenant Folk Union are an explosive new London based folk and bluegrass outfit.
Writing and performing their own unique brand of Old-Time, Bluegrass, Gospel and Celtic Folk, Southern Tenant Folk Union appropriate the themes, ideas and metaphors from traditional folk songs and 20th century Americana music to document and reflect modern life through styles popularised by musicians such as The Carter Family, The Stanley Brothers and even Dillard & Clark."
The Epstein
Rolling Stone Germany (****): "There has not been a better band to come out of England this year, the epstein play in another league - in a vast, desert like land of the soul."
Q Magazine (***): "...as engaging as Calexico and as an endearing as The Broken Family Band."
The Zetland Players
"The Zetland Players do something with music that other bands are finding harder and harder to do. They make you dream and move to the music. In the venue, I saw an old couple waltz and a pirate applaud a ship captain. Others danced a jig and ate strawberries from champagne flutes. Even I, usually dead on my feet, began tapping my toes, and didn’t wake up until the music had stopped."

Folkworks: Whippersnapper at The Sage, Gateshead, Tyneside 8:00pm
"Whippersnapper was formed in 1983 by Dave Swarbrick (previously renowned on the folk scene for his work solos and with Beryl Marriott, The Ian Campbell Folk Group, Martin Carthy and Fairport Convention). This was the first band he had brought together himself, and he lined up Martin Jenkins, Chris Leslie and Kevin Dempsey - three of the most respected acoustic string players in the country. The news, in 2007, that the group was to reform was nothing short of a dream come true for countless fans for whom seeing the band one more time was high on their wish-list.

James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006
