His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving.
There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting has produced some real gems, from the truck-stop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good”."

"Simply one of the best singer/songwriters around; Bill's songs are performed live solo, as a duo or in bands of up to six members: you should hear them soon.
The sheer quality of the work is evident at once - this is, after all, a man whose voice can be heard behind artists as diverse as David Bowie, Robert Plant and Kylie Minogue, and whose writing credits range from the mainstream - the infamous PWL hit factory, commercials, TV and film music (including the 'Sister Act' soundtrack) - to the experimental: try dropping names like Yellow Note, Happyhead and 7Kings."

"I'd go a long way to listen to Johnny Dickinson. You hear a lot of good influences in his music but the result is something special. For me his playing really hits the spot." John Renbourn

With a line up of amazing and renowned UK folk musicians, Red Ruth are tipped to be the next big thing on the folk festival scene."

The Queensbury Rules at The Woodlark Folk Club, The Woodlark Inn, Church Street, Lambley, Nottingham
"Having spent three years serving their apprenticeship in the folk clubs of Britain, The Queensberry Rules first signified their arrival on the folk circuit with the release of their 2004 album – ‘Heritage and History’. Self produced and released, it contained a collection of songs focusing, in the main, on their home city of Stoke on-Trent. Songs such as ‘The Saggar Makers Bottom Knocker’ and the title track, talked of trade and industry synonymous with the area, whilst ‘Jam Jar Wakes’ dealt with the local traditions. So successful was the album in introducing the band to new audiences, that their burgeoning reputation also alerted the attentions of the Fellside label in Workington, Cumbria. One of the most prolific and well-respected folk record labels in the UK, and home to staples of the scene such as Spiers and Boden, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Bram Taylor and Cockersdale, and who also launched the careers of Jez Lowe and John Wright."

This extraordinary, exciting and high-profile harp-based international music project combines the remarkable talent of Catrin Finch (Cymru/Wales), with vibrant Colombian band Cimarron.

She was recently nominated for a Classical Brit Award.
Seven piece band Cimarron are the most accomplished llanera group in Colombia, and have performed worldwide during a 20 year career. Led by harpist and composer Carlos Rojas, and drawn from the Mestizo people that inhabit the savannahs of the great Orinoco River, their joropo music is a fiercely virtuosic display of rippling melodies played on a harp, bandola and cuatro accompanied by bass, maracas and high-pitched voices reminiscent of Andalusian gypsy roots.

Their music is a powerful blend of traditional and contemporary folk songs, taking the tradition forward into the 21st century.

"James Hollingsworth’s main stage set on the Saturday afternoon of the festival ranged from what was grounded in the traditional – a voice buzzing in the ear, the familiar plucked guitar – to what seemed to border on the celestial, as both voice and a much effected, but delicately measured, acoustic guitar swept back and forth across the arena. James’ performance was captivating…truly so, as many followed him to the intimate surroundings of the Bar Stage later in the afternoon, where an equally diverse mixture of songs and styles was in evidence." - Abbey Mill Folk Festival, 2006

Their new CD ‘Take Yourself a Wife’ (which Stu has indeed done recently, making an honest woman of Debbie) has received exceptional reviews across the board, and they are up for ‘Duo of the Year’ at the 2009 BBC Folk Awards. Catch them while you can! "

Combining all the energy of the most raucous of folk songs with an inspired bass and a full drum kit, they have arrived on the scene like a young Levellers determined to get the party started. These rising stars inject an explosion of energy into folk with punkish self-confidence, fearless arena-rock abandon and an undeniably youthful energy which leaves audiences clamouring for more! No wonder they’re fast gaining a reputation for being one of the most fun and entertaining bands on the folk festival circuit.
Their passion for folk music is utterly infectious and all are committed to playing and singing with integrity and respect to the tradition. Some come from families where folk music is part of their everyday lives, and some have performed in family folk bands for several years. Their material is rooted in some of the oldest songs of Britain, carefully collected by the band from older family members and through trips to Cecil Sharp House in London, the national depository for all things folk. There are elements of rock music but you can also hear the influence of funk, jazz, pop, reggae and all types of dance music."

All Welcome

James Hollingsworth at The Prince of Wales, Ham Hill, Stoke Sub Hamdon, Somerset (3:00pm)
Paul, Alex, Jules and Andrew are well seasoned folk musicians who between them play flute, fiddle, mandola, bodhran. banjo, whistles, mandolin, melodeon, guitar and Highland and Northumbrian bagpipes (though not all at the same time!) Everybody in the band sings.
They play in a full power style which gets people dancing and singing along to sea shanties and well known songs from the likes of the Pogues and the Dubliners.
Jules, the fiddle player from the band says 'I learned my music on the road - travelling around Europe busking and gigging. When you are busking for a living you have to be entertaining and cheeky - thats what audiences get to enjoy on a night with Paddy's Whiskers.'"

Jerry & Hilary Bix at Benbow Folk Club, The Admiral Benbow, Chapel St, Penzance, Cornwall

The Rude Mechanicals at The Ferry Inn, Shoreham, Sussex
"Foot-tapping music for all occasions. Huge repertoire of varied material including original arrangements of traditional folk tunes and new compositions."

The Queensbury Rules at The Lamb Folk Club, Eastbourne, Sussex

Not forgetting the incredible ’Whippersnapper’ whose line-up also included Dave Swarbrick, Chris Leslie and Martin Jenkins. He is also playing in Swarb’s Lazarus along with Dave Swarbrick and Maartin Allcock. Kevin’s last visit to Ely Folk Club was with Uiscedwr in December 2007 when he not only played a superb set, but also starred in the Ely Folk Club Christmas pantomime - oh yes he did! Joe is a classically trained violin player, although his style owes much more to Folk, Jazz and Blues. Throughout his childhood up to the present day Joe has been performing with his brother Ben and he was a member of the legendary Albion Band 1997 - 2003. Between 1987 and 1992 Joe worked in circuses, at which time the BBC made a short film
