Everyone is welcome, either to listen or to sing and play

Diana Jones at The Greystones, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
"High Atmosphere, the third album in the remarkable career arc of singer-songwriter/visual artist Diana Jones, hits with the force of a revelation, further deepening an unprecedented body of work that began in 2006 with My Remembrance of You and continued with 2009’s Better Times Will Come. On her new release, recorded entirely live with simpatico musicians at Quad studios in Nashville and co-produced by Jones with Ketch Secor (from the band Old Crow Medicine Show), this single-minded artist continues to hew to an austere, plainspoken aesthetic, yet its timelessly homespun frameworks are embedded with distinctly topical subject matter."

Spiers and Boden at Darwen Library Theatre, Darwen, Lancashire
"Darlings of the English traditional folk scene, these jovial japers play galloping hornpipes and bouncing jigs, sing ballads, shanties and the odd 17th century heavy rock number while interspersing the music with anecdotal contextualising of the material – apparent frivolity far from diminishing the educational experience. Fiddle and squeeze seamlessly intertwine with stomp-box providing thunderous driving rhythms."

Their music, equal parts traditional folk and ramshackle pop, rip roaring and rum totingly exciting, a Skinny Lister gig is an experience that spins you round, lifts you up and puts a smile on your face all the way home."

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West at The Green Note, Camden, London
"When people talk about the music of Cahalen Morrison and Eli West, terms such as gorgeous, amazing, gentle, lush, sophisticated, soulful, organic and earthy get bandied around. Cahalen, a New Mexico native, is a multi-instrumentalist who is equally at home playing fingerstyle guitar, lap slide, mandolin and clawhammer banjo; Sharing the same authenticity, and outlook, Eli, from Seattle, had also been a busy multi-instrumentalist, sitting in at times with the likes of Michelle Shocked and members of the Wailin Jennys and Crooked Still."

Coope Boyes and Simpson and support from Jess Cahill at The Goose Is Out, East Dulwich, South London

Rag Mama Rag at The Village Pump Folk Club, Trowbridge, Wiltshire
"This English duo of Ashley and Deborah Dow make almost as much noise as any country blues band. Hardly surprising given that between them they play an orchestra of different instruments. Their knowledge of the music of the 1920s and 30s is second to none and they bring foot-tapping authenticity to Mississippi blues, ragtime, Kletzmer, country blues and original compositions."

Peter combines with two excellent musicians, ROGER FLACK (guitar) and VINCENT SALZFAAS (African percussion), to create a unique sound. Another chance to enjoy a superb evening of music that combines emotional energy, spontaneity & beauty.“Music of intelligently crafted brilliance", said ‘Songlines’ magazine.

Ira Bernstein & Riley Baugus perform Appalachian Roots at Diss Corn Hall, Diss, Suffolk
Following last year’s thrilling, sell-out performance, Ira Bernstein and Riley Baugus return to the Corn Hall to perform their old-time music and dance show – a dynamic mix of humour and skill, fiddles and feet, banjos and ballads – traditional dance, song and instrumental music from the southern Appalachian region of the US, with a few international twists thrown in. Possibly the best Appalachian step-dancer in the world, Ira’s repertoire of dance-styles – flatfooting, rhythm tap dancing, French-Canadian step dancing and English clogging – all share a common thread, the production of rhythmic, percussive sounds.

"Irish folk singer Cara Dillon took a career break after the dramatic, premature birth of her twin sons in November 2006, and returns creatively refreshed with “Hill Of Thieves”, her fourth CD, but the first release on the Charcoal label she’s formed with partner Sam Lakeman. The new material has a significantly more acoustic sound than previous albums and also sees her returning to her roots with an outstanding collection of traditional songs."

Hatful Of Rain at Brighton Acoustic Session, The Lord Nelson, 36 Tralfalgar Street, Brighton, East Sussex
With addition of Fred Davies and James Shenton the Chloe Overton project gathers pace. These two fine musicians have added a rich instrumental dimension to the band - Fred’s guitar and mandolin playing and vocals have long been admired in his appearances with the excellent Porchlight Smoker and James has an impeccable pedigree, both as a classical violinist and sometime member of The Crawfish Scrapers string band.
Phil Jones (bass and banjo) is the band’s bantering front man but the eye nor the ear never wander far from Chloe’s compelling onstage presence. Dan Cassidy & James Hickman at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
Another Ram debut, fiddler DAN is from the USA while guitarist JAMES is from the UK. Dan grew up in a musical family, taking up the violin at ten and spending his formative years absorbing a broad spectrum of musical styles including classical, folk, jazz, bluegrass, country, blues and rock. In the 1980’s he was introduced to the music of Shetland fiddler Aly Bain which sparked his keen interest in Celtic music. He’s spent the last 15 years in Iceland as a successful session musician but visits the UK regularly to perform with his own Swing Quartet. He also appeared on several of the recordings of his late sister Eva. JAMES is an excellent guitarist who was raised on a diet of folk and bluegrass and has performed at sessions and folk clubs since the age of thirteen. After music college and a stint with Uiscedwr he met Dan whilst touring in Iceland and they just clicked. Together they add sparkle, shine, swing and scintillation to songs and tunes old and new

Curtis Eller at The Green Note, Camden, London
"Detroit born and circus raised, Curtis Eller has built a strong following in the UK based on full throttle live shows where slapstick and silent comedy meets the urgency of an early David Byrne. However, despite the Groucho moustache, braces and baggy trousers, this isn't the sideshow that it may first appear. Eller is a gifted writer raised on Randy Newman, The Band and Tom Waits. His often melancholy, often angry songs describe a dream like view of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one."

This though, has always been the Steeleye way. Tied not to the past, the present or the future – simply timeless."

The Urban Folk Quartet at Ashford Institute Church St, Ashford in the Water, Bakewell, Derbyshire. DE45 1QB 01629 640328
"The premise is simple: four highly accomplished musicians, a dozen instruments and four voices coming together to put on a high-energy show of grooving, globally-influenced folk music that will take your breath away.
The result is a show like no other.
Blistering beats, burning fiddle tunes and elements from all four corners of the globe delivered with boundless energy and humour. It's true fusion - not just the careless splicing together of genres. The UFQ are equally at home delivering a sombre air or harmonised Appalachian folk song as they are ripping into a rock-infused reel.

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West at The Tin Hut, Gartly, Aberdeenshire

A Hawk and Hacksaw rescore 'Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors' at Norwich Arts Centre, Norwich, Norfolk
This very special show is being performed in only 3 places, The Barbican, All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival and Norwich Arts Centre.
New Mexico’s widescreen roving folk duo A Hawk and A Hacksaw present their first live soundtrack, a brand new rescore of legendary Russian director Sergio Paradjanov’s classic film “Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors”. Mixing folklore, sorcery and religious symbolism, the film tells the age old tale of a peasant’s love and loss set high up in the Carpathian mountains.

Playing their own particular brand of Folk music, they were brought together by a series of chance meetings at sessions around the North West of England, bonding over red hair and a shared love of traditional music, they have been shaking up assorted kitchens, public houses and folk venues ever since."
